What is Foreskin Infection?
The foreskin is usually more susceptible to infections as urine often gets trapped under the foreskin creating an environment where bacteria and fungi grow easily. This turns into a bigger problem for people with diabetes, as their urine may contain sugar which makes it an even better environment for the bacteria and fungi to grow in.
In fact, many find out that they have diabetes when they suffer from a foreskin infection. Certain medication used to treat diabetes (SGLT2 inhibitors) - that promote the passing of sugar in the urine - can also greatly increase the risk of a foreskin infection.
What is Balanitis?
Balanitis is the infection of the foreskin and head of the penis. It is caused by bacteria or fungus, or a combination of both. It is more commonly seen in boys and men who are not circumcised.
Signs and symptoms of Balanitis
What are the signs & symptoms of Balanitis?
The common symptoms include:
- Redness and swelling
- Foul smelling odour coming from penis
- The build-up of thick fluid around your penis
- Pain during urination
The risk of Balanitis may increase for those with a tight foreskin - Phimosis. It is a condition of unusually tight foreskin that cannot be drawn back from the head of the penis.
What are the causes of Balanitis?
Balanitis can be caused by poor hygiene leading to a build-up of smegma. Smegma is the combination of dead skin cells, oil, and other fluids on the tip of the penis. If left for prolonged periods it can lead to fungal and bacterial infections.
What are the treatments options for Balanitis?
You should see your doctor if you have persistent swelling, redness or irritation or if you have other accompanying symptoms like penile discharge or painful urination.
Most cases of balanitis are easily treated with good hygiene and creams and ointments recommended by your doctors. A circumcision may be advised in recurrent cases of balanitis.
You can have sex during treatment if your balanitis isn’t caused by an infection. But if it’s caused by an infection, like an STI or thrush, there’s a risk of passing this on.
